Claire Spooner is a Humanistic Psychotherapist, Coach and Supervisor. She creates and runs workshops and courses to enable people to realise their potential and experience more joy, satisfaction and aliveness. About Claire (she/her) I am a humanistic psychotherapist with more than fifteen years’ experience. In addition to my own therapy practice I have worked as a therapist within the NHS and the Youth Offending Service, for MIND, for the City Literary Institute in London and Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, and most recently as a supervisor for Centre 33 in Cambridge. My original training was with Spectrum Therapy in North London and I accredited with the BACP in 2012. I completed a three-year training in Pesso Boyden Psychotherapy (PBSP) in 2020 and am also a trained supervisor. Since 2021 I have been offering coaching in addition to therapy, workshops and supervision. In all areas of my work the focus of my practice is on finding the ways every individual can live their lives more fully as themself . I am particularly interested in challenging people to find the edges that take them beyond just functioning and towards realising more of their potential in all areas of their lives. I have experience working with anxiety, low self-esteem and addictions; race, identity, gender, sexuality and relationship diversity issues; moving beyond childhood trauma and recovering from abuse; working with cult survivors and service veterans, dealing with illness and loss, and sex and relationship issues. I am passionate about supporting people who are really motivated to seek change, particularly during times of transition. Most of my work is with individuals but I will occasionally work with couples or family members. Everyone’s experience of therapy is different, but my hope is that each person I work with will come away from the process with a richer sense of being alive. My background is in the arts. Originally a landscape architect, I designed school and community sensory gardens before starting my own garden design business. I also worked as a theatre designer and art director for a number of years. I am a partner, a mother and a stepmother. claire@clairespooner.com

This course emerged out of my own process over the last few years as I’ve engaged in questioning and assessing different aspects of my own life. I noticed that although I find the process of deep reflection incredibly valuable, I struggle to find the time to do it. The challenge of carving out the time and space can in itself feel too much and I know I’m not alone in sometimes feeling that ‘life is living me’! I realised I could usefully combine my skills and experience as a therapist along with those I've gained running workshops and coaching other therapists to offer something more widely, a course relevant to everyone. I'm offering this in a group format as some of the most powerful processes and the greatest learnings in my own life have co me from working in groups. There is a richness of experience to group work that's very different to individual work. The course pulls together some of my favourite aspects of working as a therapist and coach: encouraging people to strive for their best experiences in life, not just good enough. I’ve drawn on a range of influences including Gestalt therapy, body psychotherapies - particularly Pesso Boyden Method (PBSP), Tantra, Internal Family Systems (IFS) as well as coaching and life design principles. testimonials Anchor 1 A simple overview of the structure of the course: Week One Reflecting: Where are you now and how do you feel about it? Form Testimonials and feedback from past participants: "The Holistic Life Review course was a truly enriching experience that surpassed my expectations on many levels. The weekly sessions quickly became the highlight of my week, offering a space for meaningful reflection and exploration in the company of like-minded individuals. Claire skilfully guided us through a series of exercises that encouraged deep introspection and dialogue, leading to moments of profound insight and growth. I gained invaluable clarity about what truly matters to me in life and discovered newfound momentum towards aligning my actions with my values and aspirations. The course provided a roadmap for navigating life's transitions and challenges with grace and purpose. One aspect that particularly stood out to me was the diverse mix of ages among participants, which brought a rich tapestry of perspectives and life experiences to our discussions. This diversity not only broadened my own understanding but also fostered a strong sense of community and connection throughout the course. I can't recommend the Holistic Life Review course highly enough to anyone seeking a supportive community, profound self-discovery, and tangible steps towards a more fulfilling life journey." Olivia, London, UK *** "Anyone in the world of entrepreneurship and business would benefit immensely from The Holistic Life Review. It helped me re-evaluate the orientation of my business and find the "true north" for my venture. In an entrepreneurial journey, it is easy to make choices under pressure that are not aligned with your values or lived experiences. Claire's course helps one to take a step back, and ask "What do I really want out of this? Why am I doing this?" and move forward with clarity and confidence. " Piyush Ahuja, Founder, Cambridge Innovation Labs, Cambridge, UK *** "Claire was a really brilliant leader and facilitator, and held the group and individuals incredibly well. This generated a strong sense of possibility and of safety, in both breakout rooms and whole group work, and struck me as quite remarkable. The course was designed carefully to build and develop over the weeks, so that each exercise yielded its own insights while contributing to a broader and longer-term programme of reflection and development: I found it immensely generative." David, Cambridge, UK *** CLICK HERE TO REGISTER "This course takes you on a carefully paced journey beneath the surface of what you think you know about your life. Through considered exercises and key prompts, you find yourself compassionately examining the neglected areas and the blocks you have unwittingly constructed to your own growth and fulfilment. One of the most powerful components of this for me was the role of the group. Claire fostered a really supportive environment, in which the usual dread of breakout rooms was dispelled and those spaces were some of the most rich and fruitful. This happened in both the witnessing of other peoples' reflections (which so often mirrored my own) and of being given time to feel safe to share as much or as little of what was coming up for me. I am left feeling affirmed and boosted. I am making changes, and being kind to myself in the process. I have met some wonderful people who I wouldn't normally cross paths with. Each session was as valuable as a therapy session. I can't recommend this course highly enough." Rosa, Cornwall, UK *** "I am thrilled with the treasures I've uncovered in myself following Claire's Holistic Life Review, and the new goals it has prompted me to set. Over four weeks', my attention was drawn to what pleases me, soothes me, and makes my heart sing. I live in the U.S., with a 6-hour difference in time zones. The digital format allowed me to participate with the group, fit the sessions into an early morning routine, and when, some weeks, I could not attend a complete session, catch-up with the recording later in the week. I consider myself a "gentle Alpha-type". I am a business executive and a single mother. I care deeply about, and take actions toward, heart-centered exploration and healing, but my ambitions can shut me off from my heart. This reflective month of sessions softened me and connected me with a loving group of people willing to be vulnerable and invite my vulnerability." Amelia, Wisconsin, United States *** CLICK HERE TO REGISTER "Thank you for amazing sessions over the last month, it has been really thought provoking and a lot to take in (in a good way). You were amazing at facilitation and explaining complex ideas very simply so we could put them into action. Thank you so much!" Caroline, Cambridge, UK *** "The course exceeded my expectations. You get a lot of bang for your buck. It felt like much more than 12 hours of training, as spread over the four weeks it felt like we had you guide us the whole time. Given what I have spent on other (completely different) training courses this is excellent value. It's left me with a valuable toolkit for so many life skills which I, my family, my colleagues and my friends will benefit from. I feel grateful to have been on the first cohort and wish for many others to hear Claire’s wise words." Catherine, Scottish highlands, UK *** "I just wanted to thank you again for the fabulous course. I thought you framed the exercises really well, and I enjoyed the flow of the sessions, which struck a good balance between time in the wider group and smaller group time. In deciding to join, I had a few misgivings about meeting online, but it worked well and I am so pleased I followed my instincts and said yes!" Katharine, Adelaide, Australia *** "I found the Holistic Life Review incredibly helpful, and I'm reflecting on it and using the exercises a lot, and drawing so much clarity from it. Everything felt so well-paced, wise and kind. Thank you very, very mu ch!" Marion, Cambridge, UK *** "I joined the Holistic Life review to do some personal stock-taking and to get to grips with the reasons I kept getting stuck with the book I was writing. I found the course very helpful, at times illuminating. It has left me better able to cope with my task, better able to think about myself, and generally feeling happier and more positive about all sorts of things. It was also, simply, very enjoyable as well as constructively challenging." Ian, Suffolk, UK *** CLICK HERE TO REGISTER "The course was great for me as it was very well held, fast paced, highly structured and focused. I really appreciated the openness of the group; but that was because of your safe holding combined with vulnerability. I think the fact that everyone stayed the course is proof of how good it was." Lisa, Somerset, UK *** "The Holistic Life Review course achieved what I wanted in unexpected and creative ways. The course is carefully designed, it works well as a whole. The course being on Zoom in no way took away from an interpersonal dynamic. It allowed a huge variety of people to come who couldn’t have, had it been in-person. The question ‘what do you want out of life’ was not approached directly but through imaginative, focussed but open-ended exercises which were then shared (as much or as little as we wanted to) in small break-out rooms. As someone with an aversion to break-out rooms I w as surprised how wonderful they were. Claire was well able to listen, to support, and to not judge when participants shared. The breakout rooms took that example forward and they were safe spaces to share in." Patricia, Cambridge, UK *** "Well organised, well structured and professional. Loads of interesting, helpful co ntent and I am grateful you provided a summary after each weekly session. I enjoyed the breakout groups - a great bunch of people!" - Coaching, Supervision & Workshops | Claire Spooner
Contact Claire for individual coaching and supervision and read more about her workshops for therapists. Coaching, Supervision and Workshops Coaching My coaching practice has grown out of my passion for supporting people to get more of what they want in all areas of their lives. Initially I supported other therapists to develop their practices in ways which they found most satisfying, encouraging them to consider their work more holisitcally, and to recognise that the happier they are in their work, the more their clients will benefit too. I discovered I loved this focussed work that was not in itself therapeutic, but that still felt transformative. As my confidence has grown I have started offering coaching more widely, not just to other practitioners but to anyone who is interested in a holistic and embodied approach to thinking about their life. If you're interested please contact me to discuss your needs and what I can offer. Supervision *** Please note (November 2023) : I am currently unable to take on new supervisees and will update this when circumstances change *** I offer clinical supervision to other therapists working with adults and adolescents. I love the collaborative nature of supervision and my approach is relational, integrative and holistic. My approach allows you to decide if you want the focus to be entirely on clinical work, while also allowing space to explore aspects of your life that may impact your practice should you wish. I have experience supervising therapists trained in a range of modalities including Humanistic, Psychodynamic, CBT, body-based therapies, person-centred, Integrative and Gestalt. Sessions are possible either online or face to face. My current fee is £80. My preference is to work fortnightly for 50 minutes although in some circumstances I will consider meeting monthly. Workshops for Therapists I run workshops for other therapists interested in building a more satisfying and sustainable practice. The focus of this work is to clarify and define what we want from our therapy practice and provide opportunities for identifying beliefs and issues that may be holding us back, offering a framework to explore how we can create and achieve the practice that works best for us. Please contact me for more information. Feedback from past workshops: ‘Six of the most useful hours of my therapy training. It has transformed my practice and my sense of myself as a therapist, boosted my client numbers and what I can charge.’ Karen, Cardiff ‘What an amazingly powerful workshop. I have made key changes both to my practice and to how I take care of myself with professional support. I feel really grateful for the well planned, well led and enjoyable day.’ Florence, London claire@clairespooner.com
- Kim | Claire Spooner
Kim Ward 1975 - 2020 The Holistic Life Review May/June 2025 course is running in memory of my dear friend, Kim Ward. Kim was an incredible woman who got stuff done and made the world a better place, always. She was one of the most kind, intelligent, generous and fun people I've ever known. She could party all night and still get up to look after the kids (with astonishing good humour!). She was also an amazing activist, advocate, campaigner and powerhouse for positive change in the world. Kim died in 2020, suddenly, of a brain tumor. It has taken me some time to get to this, being of a different consitution to Kim, and far slower to action. But dedicating this course to her memory is something I've wanted to do for some time. I will be donating 100% of the course fees from the May June 2025 Holistic Life Review course to two charities. One is Choose Love , a UK based NGO which provides humanitarian aid and advocacy for refugees around the world. The other is the St Kilda Gatehouse , a Melbourne-based organisation who support young people at risk of sexual exploitation, and women who are reliant on street based sex work. One is a very local charity, one has a global reach. Both are organisations Kim would have appreciated and supported. Thanks for sharing the details of this course to anyone you think might be interested, it would be wonderful to have a large group of people coming together to reflect on how to get the most meaning out of their lives, in memory of Kim's very special life.
- Therapy | Claire Spooner
Claire offers humanistic psychotherapy to individuals seeking greater satisfaction and meaning in their lives. Therapy Please note: I will be taking a sabbatical year in Australia from September 2024. During this period I will be working in AEDT and AEST timezones, coaching and offering therapy and supervision online. I may be offering outdoor face to face sessions in Melbourne during 2025. Therapy is an exciting and challenging process that can transform our experience of the world and ourselves in it. It can provide support in times of crisis, and enable us to make the best of our lives when sometimes things don’t go to plan. Therapy can help us to understand ourselves better, to change patterns of behaviour that no longer work for us, to find solutions to challenges we may be facing and allow us to process and move beyond experiences that might be holding us back or bringing us pain. In these ways we can take charge of our lives. Feelings of confusion, sadness, anger, or being unable to feel at all, how we deal with a specific issue such as a bereavement or relationship breakdown, or simply how we find a sense of meaning and richness to life… these are some of the many reasons why we may decide to start therapy. I offer humanistic psychotherapy (using the term ‘therapy’ for convenience). I am interested in the whole person: their mind, body, feelings, life circumstances, family history and cultural background. We are all unique, and I believe that each person is the best judge of what is right for them, so the therapy has to respond to the individual. I want everyone I work with to feel safe enough to explore any issue they need to in a non-judgemental and confidential environment. Testimonials: ‘Working with Claire was my first experience with therapy. I have to say that making the decision to try therapy was not an easy one and I remember being very apprehensive at the thought of first meeting a therapist. I came across Claire’s profile by chance and I am so incredibly grateful that I trusted my gut feeling and contacted her. I worked with Claire for a total of about four years, and I can honestly say that she is one of the warmest and most gentle people I have ever met. She made me feel safe and accepted and heard in a way I had never experienced before. I believe that what I was able to accomplish with her help and support was some of the most important work I will do in my life, and I don’t believe I could have chosen a better person with whom to embark on such a difficult but ultimately incredibly rewarding journey. She has my heartfelt thanks and eternal gratitude.’ AR 'I was at my lowest point when I decided to seek therapy with Claire. Our sessions covered several aspects of my life: relocating to a new country; struggling with dysfunctional family relationships; managing conflict in my marriage and at work; dealing with the pain of social rejection and feelings of low self-esteem. With no support system in place, I confided in Claire, who listened with kindness, understanding, and empathy. Despite moving our sessions online due to the pandemic, I continued to reap the benefits. Claire and I only met a handful of times, but the transformative impact of her therapeutic practice has been life-changing.' MA ‘Some years ago my late wife was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and as we talked about what it would mean and how we would cope with it, she suggested, quite insistently, that I should have a therapist to talk to, to help me through what was obviously going to be a very difficult and upsetting time. At first I was reluctant, but I made an initial appointment to see Claire Spooner and discuss it. There was something about the mixture of care, understanding and detachment in her approach that gave me the confidence to continue, and I came to value our weekly sessions very much indeed. It didn’t matter whether I came feeling angry or miserable or cheery or fretful, I found talking led to more talking, and always to a greater understanding of myself and my world. Claire, I realised, was very adept at encouraging our conversation down productive paths, never judgmental, able to press me to think harder sometimes, to follow my thoughts into a degree of self-realisation that I found illuminating and extremely helpful. So much so, in fact, that when I reluctantly decided to end our sessions, after three and a half years, I found that though I missed them and the space of calm reflection and (not always so calm) self-examination they offered, I was left with a new kind of inner resource, a sort of inner Claire-voice. It’s still working for me, and I shall always be grateful for it.’ IP 'Claire and I worked together for just ten sessions and still (six years later) I think back to the things we talked about and how valuable that time was. I was looking for a therapist for the first time after going through a messy breakup, and found Claire so easy to talk to it was like going to see friend. We started with the relationship but soon moved on to much more interesting and positive things - talking about my career, family, how I see myself, and how I relate to others more broadly. Claire challenged my thinking in a really gentle way, and the body work we did is something I still talk to friends about today. It was fascinating, and made me aware of how self compassion could lead to a healthier outlook on my life. Some months after our sessions my dad passed away from a long-term illness, but because of the work we’d done I was so much better prepared in supporting my family and in processing things myself. Our conversations charged me up creatively too - my work as a designer really developed afterwards because of the confidence I gained. I’ll always be grateful to have had the chance to work with Claire, and for my first experience of therapy to have been such a positive one.' AB claire@clairespooner.com

Some of the information below (particularly the 'Where') will not be relevant during this period! What should I expect from therapy? The first couple of sessions provide an opportunity to see if we both feel we can work well together. In these sessions I will be interested in what has brought you and we will look at what you aim to get from therapy and see if we both feel the way I work will suit you. It is likely that therapy will involve some exploration of your childhood experiences, along with your current circumstances and any issues in the present which may have brought you. As well as being interested in your thoughts and feelings, I will also draw your attention to what is happening in your body. Our nervous system is inextricably linked to our mental state so I am always curious about the information held in the body. Therapy can be a very creative process, and I often use visualisations, imagery and metaphor to help deepen the work. How? Hybrid working: face to face, online and outdoors... Since the Coronavirus pandemic I have adopted a hybrid approach to working. In addition to face-to-face and online sessions I also offer sessions outdoors, walking and talking (or sometimes sitting in the sunshine when the weather permits). There is a physicality to this work which is very different from the usual format of therapy and this way of working is proving to be very popular - here is a description of outdoor work from someone I have worked with for some time now: 'Having sessions outside began – for me at least – as a pragmatic response to the Covid pandemic: an opportunity to meet in person rather than on screen. However, it was clear as soon as we started that Claire had been thinking about it for some time as having its own set of possibilities, and I have found it to be profoundly significant and revealing as a practice. There is something about it – perhaps the rhythms of walking and speaking; the sense of openness and landscape; being mainly alongside one another rather than face-to-face; and even the changing weather – which generates a very embodied kind of reflection and insight. It also feels like a natural extension of Claire’s approach, which always pays deep attention to the felt nature of thoughts and experiences. I was concerned at first about the challenges: what about being overheard, or being upset in public? Claire addressed these with typical care and thoughtfulness, however, and they have not proved to be problematic or inhibiting at all. This move to therapy in the open air has been and continues to be of immense and particular value to me, yielding understanding and offering resources for hope even when things have felt dark. I am so grateful to Claire for suggesting it.' I have worked online for a number of years so am comfortable providing therapy in this way, and find there can be many benefits to it – not least allowing people to continue to benefit from the work if they move away. How long? Therapy and supervision sessions last fifty minutes. With therapy, meeting weekly - ideally at the same time - creates a sense of continuity and helps get the best from the therapy by building on what has already been covered. I encourage this regularity, particularly at the start of our work together. I build in regular reviews to all my work. Coaching sessions may vary in length and we can discuss this before we start. How much? I charge £80 per session for both therapy and supervision, payable in advance of each session. I have a limited number of discounted rates available for those in genuine need – please ask when you contact me. Where? My practice is located on Sturton Street in central Cambridge, fifteen minutes’ walk from the train station and the city centre. There are pay-and-display parking bays nearby on Sturton Street, or non-restricted parking is available on nearby streets (York St or Abbey Walk are closest). There is plenty of parking in the nearby Beehive Centre which is a five minute walk away. Outdoor sessions are held nearby on Coldham's Common. Online sessions are on Zoom.
